In their section dated 12/14 they cite other sources as saying that Lion King and Little Mermaid may make their way to IMAX screen, too.

Beauty and the Beast? Great movie but I doubt I will go for the IMAX version.

Being the last of the features which was hand painted, and all the one since were Ink and Painted digitally, the film would suffer the same problem as The Sorcerers Aprentice in Fantasia 2000, it would just appear to grainy, blown up to that size.

Any film since would probably work on IMAX, since they all are painted on the computer, there was no film invloved.

With the recent reports that it is being considered for an IMAX release, I wonder if they colored the whole film both digitally and manually, using whichever version looked better for each portion of the film. It is possible that the whole film could still exist in the digital domain, which would allow them to use current technology to create a presentable IMAX version of the film.

This is pure speculation, though. It could be that people are throwing out the title as a suggestion just because of its popularity, without thinking through the technical issues.

That's because that was pen-and-inked by hand and is from the original Fantasia. So I guess anything that is pen-and-inked would be grainy in IMAX and large-screen theatres.

So I doubt "The Little Mermaid" will be seen in IMAX-style.

IMAX is neat when you're watching large scale things (the old 'Horizons' loop, especially the DNA helix), and big, vast, scenes.

But watching 'Beauty and the Beast' on a huge screen? -- yikes. I'm not sure I want to see Belle's mug that big.

Some new AMC theaters near my house, have adapted similar IMAX seating. They have the stadium style seating in the whole theater. (I haven't been in the DD AMC theaters, so I don't know if they are similar, but would think so)

So with somewhat similar theater seating, IMAX becomes practically obsolete, unless you want to seat a bazillion people, or if you need to move the seats around like in Soarin' or Back to the future.

We're planning on taking my father in law to see the Lord of the Rings on Imax this Saturday, and then my sisters in law to Beauty and the Beast on Imax next week. I guess I'll get my Imax quota for the year in, huh?

Essentially, the image size is equivalent to the largest of regular movie screens. Usually, the biggest advantage of seeing a 35mm film in an IMAX theater is actually with the audio. IMAX theaters typically have better quality sound systems than regular theaters.

Just as a note of clarification, this information does >not< apply to "Beauty and the Beast". That film has been converted to true IMAX format and will be shown using IMAX prints (70mm film printed sidewise).
