So you are right, it depends on where you draw the line.

I don’t like it. It’s a typical Paris thing. No other Disney park around the globe does such cheap things. There should be more American Imagineers at work.

For Disneyland's 50th anniversary in 2005, all attractions that opened in 1955 recieved a vehicle painted gold. Some went all out (the gold teacup was particulary cool), some went halway (one of the locomotives on Casey Jr turned gold, but the rest of the train remained the same), some barely tried (the Mark Twain got a few gold accents and gold bunting), and some just gave up (Peter Pan only had a golden ship for a photo spot; the columns at the entrance to Snow White were painted gold but nothing was done to a vehicle). All of the streetlamps along Main Street were also painted gold, given oversized bouquets of fake flowers, and a Tinkerbell figure on each one.

The castle was also repainted for that anniversary, featuring gold highlights on all the parts that used to be tan, and a way-too-pink base coat. While it was great for the celebration with the extra banners up, we've been stuck with it for nearly a decade as the sun has slowly and mercifully allowed it to fade.

In all fairness though, the 50th anniversary is traditionally considered the 'gold' anniversary, so I'm not sure why they're doing it for the 20th. According to Wikipedia, the 20th is traditionally for China (dishes), but the modern version is platinum. I think that either could have been made into a neat overlay.

Just because Paris is especially good at getting bad overlays, doesn't meant that they don't happen in other places (Or that they're not good for the occasional event. It's just when you have them all the time, like DLP, or they never really 'undo' it, like DL, that it's no good.)

And if you want ugly, let's not forget what happened to the castle in WDW for the 25th (which I personally loved, but it seems to be hated by everybody else)

I can't wait to see what pins Disney will release for the 20th birthday. The 15th birthday pins were nice.
