She went into the hospital last July with a severe abdominal infection resulting from a perforated colon. She was put into an induced coma for over two months to give her body time to heal with minimum stresses placed on it. At the time there was only about a 50% chance Kris would recover. Most of her doctors told her that if she recovered she would likely have to live the rest of her life in a nursing home. Besides the perforated colon problem, Kris had long standing problems from severe rheumatoid arthritis. Over the past six months she underwent both neck surgery and back surgery to relieve those problems. Her feet had also 'frozen' in a pointing position due to her extended time lying motionless in bed, so she also had to have surgery on her feet so it was possible for her to stand again. Through all of this the chances of her ever recovering enough to go home were remote. But Kris is a stubborn cuss. She really pushed her physical rehabilitation. Even though it was very painful, my mother was told that Kris did about 3 times the amount of rehab activity that a typical patient will do. It obviously paid off... she is now at home. She still has much healing to do and still has a colostomy that the doctors plan to reverse next year. But that fact that she is home again and living on her own is an absolute miracle. Thanks to all the LP'ers who kept her in their thoughts and prayers last year when I was posting about her.
