    I've always wondered, usually after the wedding ceremony you have to sign the marriage certificate and file it. I wonder what would happen if you refused to sign the certificate? I wonder what happens then?

    Mele, laws vary from state to state but the license is what makes it a legal marriage. In some states all you have to do is mail in the certificate, no ceremony required. So I would think that if the papers aren't signed and filed you would still be single.
