There are a few animators who have c.10-20 years experience at WDAS that have left recently due to opportunities to direct elsewhere. The loyalty to the Mouse just doesn't exist any more. John is one of the more unusual ones though as he moved from Pixar to WDAS after Ratatouille completed. Colleagues tell me that he doesn't have sufficient supervising animator experience to take the next step to director. Nice guy though - Paperman may have been cliched and unoriginal but it was beautifully rendered and directed.
