The first VHS that I personally remember purchasing was actually Little Mermaid. We did have a VCR at my parents, but we only rented - it seems to me that movies were EXTREMELY expensive in Canada at that time (early 80's) and pretty much only available to video stores for rental. We bought Little Mermaid to watch at Rob's mom's house because we didn't even have a VCR yet! We were young and poor. :-D

My first VHS purchase... Wow, that's a tough one and I honestly don't remember for certain, but it may have been "Help!" - the Beatles' second film. I know I paid $65 for that one... Yowsa! And it's another of those that isn't available on DVD for some stupid reason. I DO remember it being a big deal when my ex and I rented "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and unhooked our player to take to my Grandma and Grandpa's house so we could all watch it together after a big family meal.

It's always seemed better to rent, that way someone else has to keep up with them.

I'm pretty sure the first record I bought [or at least picked out] on my own was at Thrifty Drug stores, it was an LP not a 45 [later in my elementary school years I bought a few 45s] The album was Iron Butterfly "Ball" I had no idea what the music was at the time, but the cover looked cool to me as I was fascinated with the "Hippy" look at the time. I played it over and over [probably to the dismay of my parents] Later my grandparents bought me a new record player and a "Vanilla Fudge" album, that record was *weird* In about the 5th grade, I discovered the Columbia Record Club and clipped the ad out of a magazine, taped one penny where it said "tape penny here" and got 12 records for a penny. I remember a few of them where "3 Dog Night" albums, I took a liking to 3 Dog Night as a kid. In the mid 80s I bought a VCR, I rented movies for $2 at the time, Video stores were opening all over the place. I never imagined *buying* a movie, it seemed dumb as I could simply go rent it again if I wanted to for another $2, why pay $20 to own it? Then after getting married and having a baby, we began buying Disney classic movies and Sesame Street videos for our [then] lil girl. In a couple short years we had shelves full of children's VHS tapes, they still occupy many boxes in my storage space.

They lasted about 5 minutes, everyone bought the VHS machines and I think only VHS tapes were sold after a while. We just used the blank tapes to record shows and movies and I don't think I ever actually owned a tape that was prerecorded! When we bought a VHS machine years later, I think the first tapes we had were Disney Sing Alongs.
