I was in a wheelchair for nearly 18 months and our medical insurance did not cover anywhere near all the bills, we ended up selling a car and several other things. I changed in many way through the experience, and it made me very much the social activist I am today. I also was skinny before the break, but never after. And my first experience of teaching was then as instead of PE, I helped the lower and younger readers in my school. Not a great experience at the time (besides the pain and operations, or learning about disability prejudice and accessability issues), it really opened my eyes. Since then I have broken a finger and my feet a few times.
