I got into this field because DH (he's a carpenter) & I bought a Fannie Mae dump for pennies on the dollar, flipped it & made over 100k - NICE! We built the home we're in now. I found the land/plans/ran around & got all the permits w/2 little kids in tow! I found the whole process very interesting & thought I could help others in the same!!

If I make a million at the cookie store of my dreams, retirement could be sooner.

This happen of course right after I sold my home and relocated from the Bay Area, CA to Atlanta. LOL! Thankfully I did not buy a home here. So who knows. I'm just taking it one day at a time. With my pension I could retire at 55 but I doubt that will happen. So I'm probably looking at another 20 years unless I can figure out how to do something of my own and strike it rich. ;>

Plus we didn't like the idea of paying someone else to raise our child for such a large part of the day. Before that I worked in a group home with people with disabilities (one child, one young adult, one slightly older adult) It was a family model home and my job included everything from daily care routines to helping these folks participate in their school and/or community activities. While I did enjoy this job it is a bit of a stepping stone in that what I would really like to do (at least at the moment) is get in the school system as an EA. It is an often unappreciated job but I really helping children with disabilities realize their potential which is so often so much more than what they have been given the chance to achieve.

And, I'll say I'm in the middle of my career - coming up on 11 years as a Dell employee, and hoping to remain with Dell until I retire, which is still about 28 years away if I retire at 65. (And, wow, that makes me feel young to look at it that way! Woo hoo! hehe) Anyhow, in a dream world, I'd be on staff at a professional theatre working as a stage manager, but unless I marry a rich guy or play and win the lottery, I don't see that as possible.

We are about 10ish years to "retirement." I will retire when he retires which will be who knows when. We are imagining a home based business with a few clients before full retirement or senility which ever comes first. Self employed=no pension.

I still think it is something I would have excelled in doing. I was always fascinated by our local parlour whenever someone in our family passed away. I figured my compassion (something I have a lot of in my nature) would suit the job well. Our place was great, and they made you feel special, and I like doing that for others in my current job. I schedule an ADR stage for film and TV. I fell into it and I am in the middle of my career. I used to be the top in my field but my current company only has one stage so I feel myself slipping in stature. And I'm okay with that, actually. I'm going to have to work until I die. I have a pension, a 401k, and an IRA, but it won't be enough, considering I recently found out I'll need $3mil to retire.
