We were at the movies today, and I heard talking a bit behind me and just figured people were talking to each other, and it would be just for a minute and then they'd stop. And then I heard a few more words and then heard the woman say that she was at the movies. At that point, I was so annoyed that I turned around, pointedly looked at the woman a few rows back who was on the phone and said (not yelled), "Get off the phone." That was one of the times when I would have been tempted to swear. Right after I said that, her husband sitting next to her kind of elbowed her, and then I think she went out of the theatre for a few minutes to finish her call. If it was someone I was at the movies with, I probably would have hit him/her for doing that. I have a celphone. I generally remember to turn it off during a movie. On at least one occasion, I forgot, and the phone rang. One time, I scrambled fast enough to turn the ringer off after two rings. One time, it was on the floor, and I knew I wouldn't be able to get to it fast enough and it would be louder if I actually picked the phone up, so I cringed, waiting for it to go to voicemail and stop ringing. When it finally stopped ringing, I got to the phone and turned off the ringer. So I'm guilty of having my phone ring during a movie. But I can't imagine answering it during the movie. If I was ever in a position when I would need to answer the phone during a movie (I hope that never has to happen), I'd have it on vibrate and run outside to answer the phone. /cs

I am constantly on my phone, when I am in my office, my company's office [which is on the other side of the country] patches all calls for me through to my cell phone. Since I travel, sometimes the only time I can communicate with my wife is from my cell phone during a certain time window. My daughter's school is at least a 30 minute drive from our house 4 cities away, she usually stays after school for certain functions or to study or to just hang out, I want her to be able to be in contact with her parents so I got her a cell, I also want to be able to call her from the road, it makes me feel better knowing where she is at and who she is with. Does she good off with it and text message and take picture to send to friends and family... of course, she is a teenager, does she need that? No, but *I* need her to have that phone at all times [except during class hours] To me cell phones are quite a convenience, I do things now that I couldn't 20 years ago. It's technology, it's convenience, I see no reason NOT to have one, but that's just me. I remember when people used to tell me the internet was a waste of time and totally unnecessary.

For every "good" use for the internet that can be named, about 6 bad ones can be sited. It has gone towards eliminating family conversation and occupying time that would otherwise be used for something constructive. The internet has a very dark side and only time will tell just how much it will effect overall civilization. In the meantime, I am sitting here wasting my time doing this when I should be cleaning my house and working on all the projects I promised myself I would get done. Why? I don't know! I guess some part of it is fun!

As far as the cell phone, I always have mine on, but at the movies, I silence it and if a call comes through I answer if its importnand but dont say anything and exit the theatre to hold the conversation. CS: That person was rude and you had the right to say something.

It started filling up so he and his girlfriend decided to move down to the empty spots but he made a comment about my youngest probably having to go to the bathroom 10 times or something like that. I just let it go because my kids sit through the movies. Well, during the movie, his phone rang and he answered it and had a 5 minute phone conversation. I was so annoyed because I could hear both sides of the conversation and I was trying to watch the movie. He finally hung up and as the movie ended, I made a comment to him that next time he shouldn't judge kids by their size but really should turn his phone off because that was worse than having someone get up to use the bathroom. He just smiled because he knew I heard the comment and took my shot at him which was much better than his at my son. I see more and more teenagers playing with their phones during the movies or text messaging people. It really bothers me because I love the movies and I go alot but I am like the rest of you, turn it off or go outside and I too have forgotten to turn mine off but I never answer it, just try and get the volume down quickly or put it under my leg so the volume is muted until it quits ringing.

And you think that families that use the internet to avoid conversation would normally be talking all the time? And you don't think there are other things that people can be doing instead of doing "something constructive"? I'm pretty creative at finding things to occupy my time if I'm trying to avoid a particular chore. > In the meantime, I am sitting here wasting my time doing this when I should be cleaning my house and working on all the projects I promised myself I would get done. Why? I don't know! I guess some part of it is fun! I guess I am not of the opinion that being on these kinds of discussion boards is a waste of time. I'm not using these boards as my only way of communicating with people, but I've become acquainted in this manner with a number of people that I enjoy conversing with. I've exchanged opinions and had serious disagreements with people, but it's all interaction of some sort, and I've learned a lot of things too. Doesn't seem like a waste of time to me, even if I'm just having a silly conversation with someone. /cs

It's annoying and rude in the movie theater, but so much worse when it's a live show. I just don't get it. I really do not get why people think they are so important that their needs come before everyone else's.
