It can't be that much more expensive, and is totally worth it for something that you're expected to keep and use for a full year.

They are pretty thin for plastic (much thinner than a credit card or hotel key), so one of mine broke in my wallet a few years ago (the top edge split off, right through the middle of the magnetic strip). I had it with me, and they were happy to replace it for free. I'm not sure what the policy is if you need a new one, without bringing in the old one, but it's easy enough to just stick it in your wallet and always have it there ready to go.

I could have sworn that when I bought my WDW tickets at my Disney hotel desk that they loaded the info onto my hotel room key card. But, my memory could be failing me as I stayed offsite on my most recent visit. I know that I kept having to pull out my WDW hotel key card to get complimentary parking at the parks' parking toll booths and for early/late Magic Hours. For Magic Hours, the CMs had handheld scanning machines that they use to check your occupancy status on your hotel key card before issuing you a Magic Hours color-coded bracelet. I'm trying to remember if I also pulled out my key card at the entry gates as well. As WDW has card scanning devices for credit cards including Disney Chase card, Disney Management employees' premier perks cards that gives them discounts and/or complimentary entries at U.S. Disney locations, CM employee ID cards that gives them discounts, as well as the hotel key card scanners....I'm not sure why WDW can't have devices that can scan AP plastic cards too.

Once per year, they'll give you a courtesy paper admission ticket good for that day only if you show up without your AP. This covers the situation where you simply forgot it at home. 2. If you have the card in your possession and it's damaged, they'll replace it for free. Otherwise, it's $20 for a replacement. Obviously, it doesn't cost them $20 to replace it, but if it were not for this rule, a certain number of guests would simply never bring their passes and always show up with their photo ID and get a courtesy pass for that day or a replacement card.

You need to be careful not to get them mixed up, but worth buying in the lobby just for the plastic card later. I usually take a marker/sharpie to it to make sure it stands out.

Not sure if you can do it if you are not a guest, since they did ask for my room info the last time I bought them there, but I would ask. Can't see why they wouldn't sell them to you, they aren't discounted or anything. They can't do AP payment plan tickets (the ones you pay monthly for) at the lobby desk, but anything else is fine.
