It is odd that the've got nothing planned. There will probably be a little ceremony of some sort in Magic Kingdom on October 1st, maybe some LE merchandise released in stores this fall, and then probably not much else.

I think TDO thinks they can claim the recent D23 Destination D thing was a celebration for the anniversary. Even though not a single TDO executive bothered to even stop by the thing for 15 minutes during its 2 day run. Tells you where their priorities are right there.

and I know I 've heard you build it now and they will come...unlike the federal government they cannot raise their debt ceiling and just print more money

The number of guests in the parks is lower, making it easy to close off areas and put in strange circulation routes, and since nobody else is building homes, the cost of labor and materials is significantly lower than just a few years ago.

But the accountaneers think that building new attractions for the park might be risky, so it's safer to just not do anything of value and hope that people keep coming. That makes long-term finanacial sense.

I don't know much, but I think it was something along the lines of a new land for DAK, JII in EPCOT, MI/ST in DHS and perhaps the first phase of FLE in MK along with refurbs of several classics, to get them back in shape.

Fireworks and a parade were also planned.

    Sigh.

    Meanwhile, Disney's been building hotels.

Divert the money this way. They weathered the economic storm just fine...

Those with long term strategic plans are doing just fine. The 40th events should have been planned and budgeted before the free fall-- this was true of DCA and the Disneyland Hotel out here in California. Now that budgeted money goes a LOT further, since everyone is hungry for projects. The Disneyland Hotel was able to squeeze their budget and get a whole new pool complex that wasn't originally part of the plans.

If WDW's planners weren't so timid, they would have had plans in place, a budget set, and they would be reaping the benefit of long term planning.

WDW's Magic Kingdom turns 40 this year, big deal. It's opening wasn't any great innovation in family entertainment. It just brought what we had on the West coast to the East coast with scads more land and Disney resorts. To me the only American parks that deserve big anniversary celebrations are the innovators: Disneyland and EPCOT.

    Disagreed totally.

It was designed with the same idea in mind, but it was a park very much different from DL. New lands, new rides, and all the land, as you mentioned. A HUGE step for the WDC, going into a full fledged resort. That deserves to be celebrated, hugely.
