The disaster was caused by heavy fog, along with smoke from a controlled burn. Reports have confirmed that at least one Disney cast member was among the fatalities. He worked as an engineer at the Magic Kingdom. It's heartwrenching to hear of something like this. Visibility was at 0 percent, according to reports we had heard. Just take care if you're ever driving in heavy fog and smoke. Sometimes it's best to simply stay where you are and not take the risks of driving through any of that.

ORWEN: This is one time it would have been best to call in sick, I think. We're just sorry for all the hurt and injured, along with those who lost their lives...

What a horrible story...it must have been so frightening for all those people to crash in the first place, not be able to see ANYTHING, and hear all the crashes still happening all around!

That and blinding rain, it makes it hard to even judge where the side of the road is to pull off.

I feel very badly for everyone. And Beautys Beast - I think since this is a Disney board, the fact that one employee (from AK) was killed makes it more personal. Sort of like if you had someone at your place of work killed.

I'm glad that with 50 cars, it wasn't worse. But it's still a tragedy for those who did lose their lives (and their families).

ORWEN: It's never good to be so mean spirited. But especially, now, I can't imagine why anybody would try to pick a fight over something so sad as this.

After seeing the reckage I am amazed more people didn't die. they also had trouble getting the helicopters in this morning because of the fires and fog. just crazy. I hope noone else dies from injuries. and thank you witches for posting this info.

I have to travel it to get to and from Orlando. I have driven through some serious rain storms at that spot too, near whiteout conditions and such... it is a dangerous areas of central Florida in not perfect weather.

I heard an interview with a cop who said that at one point all he could do was watch a trapped man burn to death while screaming. Thats the stuff of nightmares.
Last January a gas station next to my house blew up killing 4 and injuring 4. 2 mins after it happened, my brother and I were in the middle of it carring people out. This one lady with a badly broken leg was laying next to a flaming gas vent that was cooking her arm. I still hear her screams. My brother and I carried her out.
Here at the TV station we had a meeting today planning for the 1 year memorial on Jan 30th.
My hearts and prayers go out to everyone hurt physically and emotionally by this tragedy. It really is like being instantly thrown into a war situation with no prep time. Being a news photog I see a lot, and I'm not sure how the First Responders sleep at night. They really are unsung heros. They do it everyday.
