I could be wrong, or maybe they didn't complete everything they wanted to. Not that anyone cares, but a month ago, I finally did it. I asked if my wife and I could sit up front with the engineers(?). Well, we had to wait for 2 trains, but it was the most fun I'd had in years. The two guys were so nice, funny and informative. One of them explained every detail of the train. So much so, that I didn't even have time to raise my head to look around. The other one just shook his head and made funny/sarcastic remarks about the other. It was awesome. Sorry for rambling...

You ask the conductor if it is possible and he/she will check with the engineer. You can only get on at the mainstreet station and you can't get off until you return to the starting point. I was suprised at how hot it is sitting behind the engine. The engineers are right next to it.
