I did the 40 days last Jan-Feb 05 and it is too much to go through in post but when people ask me "How's It Going?" in case you haven't seen it here, I say "Just getting ready for eternity."
That of course, is taken from, and is the main crux, of Rick's book.

We're out of here soon so if people can sneeze and have a thread, I can relax and talk about fun things in my life like nicknames for rooms. How about the golf library?:)

To be honest, I started about a year ago... and got stuck on chapter 8; had a hard time with that one and just couldn't get past that thought/chapter.

Then I was able to get a small paperback copy and kept it with me; i.e. on the bus, waiting for an appointment, or even before/after Daily Mass... Much better. I read a chapter a day; sometimes reading ahead 1 chapter or catching up on 1 chapter.

I feel I have to read it again, and keep a journal while I'm reading it; maybe even 1 chapter every 2 days... When I was reading it some things would pop up during the day, or in the daily liturgies, which would emphasize a thought or key point in the book.

Overall, I like the book. I don't know about the Devotional or other companion books; I guess I need to have something to work on -- i.e. journal.

I do think this would be a good study guide for a book group, worship group, and/or prayer group - maybe even an on-line group.

Of course, his TV Sermons are kind of like that as well. Have you been to any of his personal appearances?

But to be honest, I might buy the book if the 40% off sticker is still on the cover next time I visit Waldenbooks.

I'm presently reading "The Last Week" by Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan, and also "Christ the Lord" by Anne Rice.

Joel says that God is rooting for us which is a very good and HONEST thing to hear from a preacher. Sure he sounds like a used car salesperson, but Charles sounds like I should get the gun out and shoot myself I'm so terrible. Rick it seems, is in the middle. Everything here is borrowed from God, so we must approach life in that exigent type way.
You know how if you say to someone they have a nice house? The usual humble respons is "The bank owns it" Well when people tell me that I REALLY say (no bull here) "It's God's and I'm just borrowing it for awhile" Everything is God's and that's just the way I feel.
HRM--What's the deal with chapter 8? You've piqued my interest here?
