I recently was bumped by Delta too on a flight that I had scheduled months in advance. I wasn't inconvenienced as much as the person in the story I linked, but it seems this is becoming a more common occurrence.

They had to find another airline that would take them in and get them to DFW to the nxt Delta flight. Running all theough the airport to get thier on time.
It was such a big mess that they did not show up in WDW until 8:30 pm. That was 8 hours late.

Without even notifying me they had switched my flight to another and here' the kicker. My connecting flight left 1/2 hour BEFORE my first flight was supposed to land. Plus I had originally booked an early morning flight so we could go to DL that day and they switched us to an evening flight which didn't get in till 9am. I called up Orbitz first which is who I booked the flight through. They said they would refund me my money and then I could repurchase the flight at a now much higher price. The lady at Orbitz had the nerve to tell me, "well what do you expect when you pay so little for the tickets." I got absolutely nowhere with Orbitz and will never use them again EVER. I called up Delta directly and raised holy hell. Fortunately I did get a very nice and helpfull reservationist and she found me a flight that landed in Ontario instead of LAX which I prefered and they booked us on that flight with no additional charges, even though the Ontario flight was now more expensive then the LAX flight. I don't know what kind of mess it would have been had I not checked my reservations the week before and showed up at the airport for my original flight.

Airlines do that. Doing an online check in is a way to keep from getting bumped.

However, Delta has been the only one so far to actually call me on their own to move me from one flight to another weeks in advance of the flight. I would never have known, apart from an email, that the flight would have changed except that the bump they initiated caused me to miss a connecting flight and they were having trouble rerouting me.

For carriers that have seat assignments, just getting a seat assignment at the time of ticketing is usually enough, as long as you check in at the airport and are at the gate at least 15 minutes prior to departure.

If you buy a ticket and cannot get a seat assignment, that's a pretty good sign that the flight is oversold, and that you need to get to the airport early to reduce your chances of being bumped.
