I got excited about the book, the story leading into it and your absolutely stunning photo of the Twain at Disneyland Paris... but you unfortunately lost me after that. It's a cute idea but it seems you're just opening your personal vacation photos to us and since the photos (seen here) just seem 'ok' and 'average', I'm curious to see if your book has more to offer.

It would be great to see items of the past, lost shows, attractions, cast members.... memories. However, in the last 8 years I'm certain most of us have taken our own photo memories. It's great that you're sharing yours with us, but can't we see this in a photo trip-report of yours somewhere on-line at no cost?

A great example is the absolutely incredible photos with your article on the Western Carribean cruise... FANTASTIC! (or did Lee take them?).

Sorry to be so discouraging. As a photographer myself, I've just seen too many mediocre photo books in my life and I was looking forward to seeing this one. Maybe I'll be proven wrong! I really do wish you the best with your new book. Everyone will have their own opinion... this is mine.

    Thank you

Lee... I didn't realize that I would be the first post in your wonderful article and I honestly feel horrible in critiquing it so harshly. My opinions like that should be private, not public. I've had time to reflect on it a bit more and although everyone is entitle to their opinions, I don't think I'm the one who should set the overall 'tone' for the forum on your coffee table book. I love our free enterprise system and I don't want my opinion slowing the release or sale of your book (although I shouldn't hold my opinion in such high regard I'm sure) I'm sure there will be PLENTY of people who will enjoy your book, no doubt about it. As a past-published photographer myself, I should know better. Shame on me! :)

After reflecting on my opinions more and studying your photos with a more open mind, I see yours and Lindsay's passion for the parks, and the people who work there and visit. That alone adds a very personal, yet special touch to the photos. Most of the photos you've posted here can be critiqued professionally and like all photos, are open to the interpretation of the person viewing them, but I forgot the most important thing about photos like these.... they are FUN to look at. Fun, quirky, odd, pleasing and all the other qualities that 'should' spark a smile and sometimes, a debate.

A good example of what I'm talking about is the wonderful photographs of Mell Kilpatrick that Laughingplace is selling through his daughter Carlene. It's not the artistic quality of the photos we're all interested in here, it's the subject matter. A piece of Disneyland history frozen in time for all of us to enjoy. THAT'S what we should all get from your new book. With the great photos and articles you've posted to LaughingPlace.com, it's your passion for the Disney parks that will drive us all to buy your book.

Anyway, I apologize if I was too hard on your book. Maybe I was having a bad morning or something. I regret my posting and I wish to encourage people to get this book, view it and enjoy it for what it is.... fun.

    Take care,

    Dan B

The thing that gets me about these images is the way they truly capture the "feel" of being in the parks.

"Discovering the Kodak Photo-Spot, my attentions turned towards image control within the controlled environment. Photo Spots (optimum visual locations) found more focus when the specific rules as dictated by the park guide book are applied." I love how Lindsay turned the camera the other way, took those little things that most take for granted, but weave themselves into a definitive sense of being there. As a Disney fan, I've always tried to explain to people that this feeling is worth the price of admission to the parks.
"There are many distinct abstractions to be bought home from these visits. These abstractions have little or nothing to do with the attractions themselves. The atmosphere makes even the most mundane of experiences interesting and with knowledge of a future venture the mind becomes full of the smaller pleasures: motion, smell and colour." BINGO! This is why I have dreams of an amusement park months after being there. Lindsay, I think you've captured exactly what we all feel. Great job... you just sold another copy of your book.
