Tooled leather, ceramics, and some other craft I'm not remembering. Won some ribbons and a small amount of money. I also entered the "Horticulture" knowledge competition. It was half written test (eg. "Which level of nitrogen is most desireable in a fertilizer for azaleas?") and half species-identification (there were tables and tables filled with parts of plants; you had to identify each plant). The prize was that the person who scored the highest out of all the fairs in Michigan would be flown to Colorado to compete in the nationals. Turns out that I scored highest in the state. But I was a few days short of being old enough to compete in the nationals. Wah. I also competed in the "Demonstration" competition. This is where you're graded on your ability to explain/teach something. I chose to demonstrate how to make a cake. This was WAY before "Queer Eye" and all the male-hosted cooking shows on TV. The judges were a bit taken aback by a GUY talking about baking, but I think that ended up working in my favor. I got graded down for not wearing an apron (as I ended up splashing some flour onto my pants), but scored well. No prize for this one, though.

Appearantly my scrapbooking was so bad they didn't even put it up. But I consider myself successful because I have been saying for years I was going to enter and never did so to FINALLY do it and get second on something means alot to me.

I hope you were able to look around at the other entries and were able to discern what distinguished First from Second from Third. That would make it a real learning experience -- and a challenge for next year. But whether you enter next year or not... Feel good about what you did THIS year! Congratulations!

It's funny; three years ago there were hardly any entries and now they have so many they run out of room!
