I know there are more characters, but this gives you a great idea of what it would look like in Disneyland's version. Oh, and I like the lighting...it's more moody than Disneyland's...maybe the colors are brighter and sharper?

Just pathetic - clearly the people building this version only cared about shoving as many cartoon characters in as they could - regardless of whether they fit in or not!

Honestly, though, I didn't really care for any of those added characters. They just looked out of place & wrong to me.

He hill looks exactly like something out of the movie, which was historically inaccurate in countless ways, but was at least consistant about things like the setting. Also, the real Pocahontas was actually pretty young (historians guess 9-12 when the story happened), so the iasw version seems to be an interesting mix of the Disney version and the real version.

Originally Posted By DlandDug The Hong Kong version has NOTHING to do with the changes being made in Anaheim. People here can argue til they're blue in the face on this one, but it's the truth. As I understand it, iasw in Hong Kong is considered a place to introduce Disney characters in China, where they are not well known. To the Chinese, all characters are equivalent. (Mickey is Shrek is Sponge Bob is Hello Kitty is Pikachu.) So Disney is using iasw to emphasize the "canon" of Disney stars. Like it or not, that's what they've done. In Disneyland, for reasons known only to the wizards at WDI, the characters are being added to "enhance" the existing attraction. (And don't think that just because I refuse to jump on a soap box and start bellowing that I approve of this.) There is a smaller cast of characters being introduced, and they are being stylized to a much higher degree to make them fit with Mary Blair's original concepts. Bear in mind that Disneyland has something quite unique-- an iasw that is NOT like any other. Only in Anaheim do we have the flat, graphic, 60s style. Heck, only in Anaheim do we have the ACTUAL flat, graphic sets used in the World's Fair, and decorated by Mary Blair and her talented fellow artists themselves. In WDW they decided to "improve" the attraction with three dimensional set pieces, a waterway that spread out on all sides, and dolls that are more plastic. (I mean that in the sculptural sense.) Disneyland Tokyo and Paris are based on the WDW model, and Hong Kong is a whole different animal. Interestingly enough, for many years there was much conversation about "fixing" what was considered to be the dull, flat, dated look of the Anaheim original. Thankfully, the attraction never lost its favor with the public, and it was largely left alone. There was a time, though, that it was looking quite shabby. Oddly, what saved it was small world holiday. The seasonal overlay, with new budget and the promise of greater guest popularity made it possible to replace burned out lights, upgrade sound systems and refurbish much that had been badly maintained over the years. There is no longer any sense that iasw will be given a wholesale remake to bring it "up" to the standards of WDW, TDL, or DLP. Thank goodness for that. As to what characters will appear in iasw Anaheim, here is a list that I am fairly confident is accurate, based on actual information from Comapny sources, and those who have actually been through and described it to me. Anything is subject to change, of course. Lilo and Stitch will be in Hawaii. I don't like the look of Stitch as I don't think he works well in the style of Mary Blair. My friend who has gone through said that Lilo's red dress looks a bit out of place, but that otherwise she fits in just fine. Alice in Wonderland and the White Rabbit in England will not only be based on Mary Blair's style, they will be based on Mary Blair's actual renderings of the characters, created when she was working on character development for the animated feature. Sleeping Beauty will appear in France. She will appear as a young girl, dressed in her peasant blouse. (ie: Briar Rose.) I assume (though I don't know) that this is also based on Mary Blair's actual renderings. Aladdin and Jasmine appear in the Middle East. Woody and Buzz will appear in the new America section. The section is divided into two parts, flanking the waterway. One side is the east coast, the other the west coast. Buzz is in the east coast, Woody in the west. My source said that they look like youngsters wearing costumes, and that the "astronaut" Buzz fits with NASA in the east, and cowboy Woody is a natural fit in the west. These are the characters I feel certain are part of the changes. I am sure there are more. I have also been told that Mickey and Minnie are definitely NOT part of the cast.
