    >>Disney officials announced Tuesday that they are making changes to the "Mission: Space" attraction at Epcot, Local 6 News has learned.

Beginning this summer, Epcot guests will have two options when it comes to the ride; they can either go on the current attraction or a new version which provides a milder experience, according to the report.

In the new version, the spinning centrifuge will be turned off for guests who are prone to motion sickness or have other conditions.

"By offering a second adventure, we hope to broaden the appeal of "Mission: Space" and enable even more guests to experience the attraction," said Al Weiss, president of Walt Disney World Resort. <<

also my engineering days are long behind me but I am sure someone can explain the centrifuge technology for the ride here, I would think there has to be a certain speed to get the feeling of weightlessness - just slowing it down would not accomplish any weightlessness anyway so there would seemto be no point.

I am Ok with this change

If you try to push yourself up from the seat at any point, weather it is the launch, floating, or crash landing, it will take the same ammount of effort.

I could be wrong, but I believe the cabin also shifts side to side during the landing, which adds to the sensation.

This was poorly thought out from the start.

To make two centrifuges stationary wastes a tremendous amount of money and shows that Disney is very concerned about the perception the attraction causes illness.

I don't see how this is going to solve the issue of people getting sick or even dieing on this attraction. They are still leaving it up to the individual to make the decision which experience they want.

I am sure that if the people that have died or been injured by riding this KNEW BEFORE that would happen, they would have chosen not to ride.

This really is just going to make the people who were afraid to ride the attraction before give it a try on "mild".

I think this move is to cover Disney's liability by making an alternative offering. But if someone has a hidden or previously unknown health condition, the same tragic events from the past will continue to occur.

(BTW, I thought it was good ride that is getting a lot of bad press.)

I for one wouldn't mind a milder version of Mission Space.

    >>When asked if the change was being made because of recent events, Disney spokeswoman Kim Prunty responded, "The answer is no.

"We are doing this for three reasons: to enable even more guests to experience the attraction; to provide an alternative that may be more suited for some guests, such as those who are prone to motion sickness or have other conditions; and to further encourage all guests to carefully consider and heed posted health warnings."

The move is being welcomed by theme park analysts and ride safety proponents.

"It sounds like a reasonable step for a self-regulated park to take," said Kathy Fackler, founder and president of SaferParks, a California-based organization crusading for independent ride safety reviews.<<

But you're missing a critical point - this particular ride is pushing G Forces to a point that is triggering conditions people didn't know they had.

    - Just like the 49 old woman
    - Just like the 4 year old boy

    I WOULDN'T RIDE IT!

    I'm healthy.

    But I don't want Mission:Space *discovering* for me a pre-existing condition I hadn't been aware of.

This is true. The percentage of people who would actually feel ill from this ride is very small. But even with small percentages, over millions of riders this can still be a "large" number.

Whereas the power of PR (both postive and negative) is very strong. I think more people are convinced they're going to feel ill by the PR alone, and thus actually do, or choose not to ride at all.

    Bummer.
