No wonder Disney didn't do Corpse, I don't know if they even had the chance to pass on it. Does anyone know anything about these two films? And do you agreet that Nightmare is so much better?

While the similarities are unmistakable (esp. when it comes to characters) They're two different beasts that need to be looked at differently. Nightmare has the best songs! It's operatic style is amazing. The characters are relatable and the overal need for change and to be accepted (as Jack does). Corpse Bride is more beautiful in ways I think. I didn't completely like it at first but once I saw it again I fell for it. I find myself always wanting to cry at the end. The characters are also relatable in a different way. I never thought I'd sympathize with Emily so much. I don't know...I'm getting to into this. Let's leave it at I love them both!

While the lyrics in NBC can be bit clunky every once in a while, the songs actually seem to have a purpose and are really fun. Also, Corpse Bride seemed kinda one-joke to me. And one joke that went on way too long. No question that NBC is better, for me.

NMBC had to be Disney because Burton thought up the idea and presented it while working in Disney Feature Animation. It became intellectual property and all that so he had to make it w/ Disney. Disney had no claims on Corpse Bride at all so I don't think there was even talk of it.... Then again I could be wrong

Im sure Tim had more money to splurge on CB then he had on NBC so if anything the more recent film should look better...

Think of how hard it was to stop gap animate the simple act of her sewing herself back together after jumping to her "death" out the lap window. Stuff like that. I think the computer was used more in CB. Look at the cemetary Jack sings his lament in, compare Zero to the CP dog... I dunno I just think the rough edginess and detial of NBC is sooo much better. It LOOKS like it took a lot longer to make.

It didn't seem to be as solid of a film as Nightmare was. <<I thought the songs in Corpse Bride were terrible (the maggot/spider duet is a lowpoint in animation). >> This is what jumped out at me immediately. The songs right off the bat seemed subpar, and I love Danny Elfman. The tune reffered to in the above quote may be the worst offender, as it was dreadfully repetetive. "The Wedding Song" sort of reminded me of "Making Christmas" in a positive way. Nightmare had much better songs overall (though it's interesting to note that composing Nightmare totally wore him out). What I really thought was amazing was the new style of animation. The facial movements especially were fluid and great to watch. As with any Burton film, there were some great visual ideas to. Yet the story seemed somewhat threadbare and I felt that the movie sort of meandered to a conclusion. The villain was really pointless had very little to do with the plot. It seems that the characters beyond the main three flitted on and off the screen so quickly that you really couldn't connect with them. I for one would have liked to see more of Bonejangles. Overall, The Nightmare Before Christmas just seems far more solid than The Corpse Bride. Jack and Sally are far more intriguing than Emily and Victor. One of the beautiful things about their characterization is the way their movements reflect those of dancers. There is just that much more heart in their design and right off the bat they are more simpathetic characters. Aside from the Bride herself, I had trouble connecting to the motivations of the Corpse Bride's characters. To be fair, Burton did have Nightmare in his head for over a decade before it came to fruition. But the Corpse Bride lacks its rich, imaginative execution. Yet for what it lacks, it is technically superior and I was glad to have seen it

I like Burton a lot, but since Big Fish, I have been much more skeptical of his work.
Originally Posted By BrnardM Tim Burton did that one to. What I mean by technically superior is that all of the figures in CB are far more intricate than their predecessors. Previously heads were replaced between shots to acheive expression. In Corpse Bride each of the figures' faces are inlaid with mechanisms that adjust their expression, making it more seamless. I have also heard that they used a computer technique to blend the seperate frames, making the characters movement more smooth. I found both of these to be especially effective in the finished film. Pecos, I agree with you, but I think that this was an intentional mistake. the majority of the movie takes place in the land of the living which is drab and in dull colors. The land of the dead is far more vibrant, but unfortunately less of the film takes place there. For all of the improvements in the animation, it does seem like they could have devised some more exciting set peices. I kind of feel like I'm being hard on the Corpse bride because saw it so close to the Wallace & Grommit movie, which I enjoyed far more.

However Mars Attacks and Ed Wood are somewhat questionable. Personally although I love NBC, it is quite an ugly film (with the exception of the graveyard scenes), whereas I find much of CB to be beautiful. I love the score in CB - especially the piano scenes. I do wonder if some of you are not quite as warm to Cb because it is new. I remember when NBC came out, I was one of the few people who fell in love with it at college, whereas now, it's very popular?
