Do you know how long they let beef hang in the cooler before they cut it up for sale? You don't want to know. Anyway, that just one example. The one that gets me the most is Beer. If you are older than the hills like I am, you remember that "aging" was a selling point for beer. Now to mollify the "germ phobia" crowd they put an expiration date on it. A whole bunch of BS if you ask me.

Rule of thumb...if it smells alright, looks alright, tastes alright and is cooked properly there is never a problem. If you open the package and the odor knocks you over, that particular thing has expired.

In a lot of cases they are used interchangeably, but a "sell by" date means it is still absolutely good until that date and for sometime after. It would have to be or lawsuits would be very common.

I hate wasting food for no good reason. And I have never had food poisoning or been ill because of this yet =)

Milk is probably the only thing I'm really picky about.. Even if it smells ok it bothers me to drink it after it's Use By..

I live the mantra of "when in doubt, throw it out".
