The new maps are computer renderings, use accurate scale and orientation, and are all oriented so the top of the page is north

While I understand the reasoning behind the changes, I think the old ones were more clear to a new visitor (the Epcot map is particularly confusing, IMO) and were just more generally visually appealing. The new ones feel very cold and heartless, and seem to highlight (with generic tree cover) the large backstage areas in the parks, rather than adjust the guest areas to make the park look more fully fleshed out

On a semi-related note, I ran the Wine & Dine Half Marathon this weekend, and the course map uses the new park maps for detail insets. We ran through a lot of the backstage areas at the Studios (about a mile total), which were drawn as trees on the map, but very clearly roads, buildings, and parking garages in person; the map just looks really funny when you compare it to what we actually saw. Then again, the old 5K map that they used for the Marathon Weekend and Princess races still showed the Horizons building in Epcot, so it's probably time that they went through and did a proper update to everything

These are the maps in use since March of this year.

While there are certain aspects of the maps that seem good, it does make me laugh how everything backstage (or not owned by Disney) is done as trees. Especially for a course map where runners will be going through those areas, do they really think that people won't notice? Plus, it's not like WDW where the unoccupied areas are trees; in Anaheim, the unoccupied areas are very urban/industrial. I think it would be much better to just leave those areas blank.

Also, once these maps go into effect for park usage, I think this will mark the third time that DCA has been rotated. Originally, it was shown with south at the top of the page (park entrance at the bottom), then for a while it was combined onto a single map with DL (with north at the top of the page), and then it got switched back to the original map. And now it's going to be flipped again, since the WDW maps are all oriented with north at the top of the page (which is yet another issue with these maps)
