With the setup and character progression throughout the film, he really develops a great personality, yet is still unmistakably a dog. His ending just makes him that much better of a character, IMO. When I read about the dog in Pirates, my immediate thought was the one next to the 3 singing pirates and the donkey. I really like how he tries to sing along (Drink up me hearties, yo ho! *arf*arf*). That's always one of those scenes that just makes me smile a little when I see it.
