I checked out a little bit of the second disc, mostly the restoration bit and the preview for Bambi 2 which actually looks half-way decent. Call me crazy but it does.

I love Bambi and couldn't wait for it to be released onto DVD.

It's still such a special story, I'm really pleased it has been restored.
    The sound is fantastic.

I cry just thinking of this movie! I think this one affected me even more than the death of Bambi's mother.

Picture's great. Sound ranges from not-so-hot to pa-freakin-thetic.

I haven't watched the whole movie yet, but a spot check revealed the following:

The "home theater" mix is a phasey, tin-can-sounding mess, the audio equivalent to colorizing, only with psychadelic swirly colors. I can't imagine why anyone would want to listen to a soundtrack that sounds like it's being piped through a wormhole from the Gamma Quadrant.

The "original mono mix," the one I'd most like to listen to, has this weird crunchy distortion on the voice tracks. I have an old audio noise reduction program on my computer that makes more or less the same noises when you turn it up way too high, although I can't say for sure that that's the cause of the problem on the DVD. I would assume that Disney would have better audio restoration programs than I do, and someone who knows how not to use them. And I haven't heard what their source was like. But whatever they did, they need to try again. It's annoying, probably moreso than whatever audio problems they were attempting to correct.

The French mix is in nasty fake stereo that tends to heavily favor the left speaker, but bad as it is, it's the best of the four.

The Spanish mix . . . oh, wow. Fake stereo is the least of its problems. Surely there's SOMEBODY at the Walt Disney Company capable of noticing that the voice track is delayed a good second or so behind the music and effects? The sound of the full chorus singing "Little April Shower" in Spanish a full beat behind the music is surreal to say the least. Is there ANYBODY left at Disney DVD that does quality control? Anybody?

Yes the picture quality is quite nice, RKO logo notwithstanding, but sheesh. Delay the release and straighten out the problems. Don't stick us with garbage like this.

Of course, I'm sure the audio on "Bambi II: You're Not My REAL Mother" will be immaculate. Grrrrrrrrrrr.

    Okay, Crazy.

<---will NEVER watch a Disney sequel (not countin' "Rescuers Down Under"...cause I accidentally saw that years ago)...unless I'm tied down and forced

BAMBI II looks so pathetic, and seeing Andreas Deja talking about his involvement on the film made me very sad.

Well, if you were on the opposite side of the wormhole and the Gamma Quadrant was the only source of sound and you REALLY REALLY wanted sound to go with Bambi, then it would be ok.
