According to IMDB.com's subscribers, "Ratatouille" is the best animated movie ever, with an average rating of 8.7 (on a scale from 1 to 10).

Is it ratings inflation (the tendency to give higher and higher ratings over time)?

Is it the Disney fans rushing to IMDB to enter their positive reviews first (with the non-Disney fans likely to come along later with negative reviews)?

Is it really the greatest animated movie ever?

    Can anybody explain this?

Here's the top 10, with their ratings:
    1. Ratatouille - 8.7
    2. Spirited Away - 8.4
    3. Princess Mononoke - 8.2
    4. The Incredibles - 8.1
    5. Cat City - 8.1
    6. Finding Nemo - 8.1
    7. Whisper of the Heart - 8.1
    8. Grave of the Fireflies - 8.0
    9. Toy Story 2 - 8.0
    10. Toy Story - 8.0

The bottom 10, just for laughs:
    1. An All Dogs Christmas Carol - 1.7
    2. Creepshow III - 2.1
    3. Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Movie - 2.1
    4. Doogal - 2.4
    5. Titanic: The Animated Movie - 2.4
    6. Evil Toons - 2.4
    7. Happily Ever After - 2.4
    8. The King and I - 2.6
    9. Pokemon 3: The Movie - 3.0
    10. Derrick - Die Pflicht ruft! - 3.2

Pinocchio is still the greatest animated film ever, IMO. Disney's greatest artists (Tytla, Babbitt, Kimball, Frank & Ollie, et al) and pulled together by Walt himself, all in one place at one time and all at the peak of their creative powers. Arguably the best Disney score ever. Action, heart, beauty, humor, scares - everything.

Anyway, any list that doesn't have Pinocchio and Snow White in the top ten is kind of suspect.

    That says it all.

Not only is it a list made up by people who know what IMDB is, they've taken the time to subscribe to it. They are film geeks who spend a good deal of time online. It's not exactly what I'd call a general cross-section of American filmgoers.

And given the website, I'm just shocked "Iron Giant" isn't there.

I just checked and it's down to 8.5. Looks like support for the notion that the first people to vote were the Disney-philes.

    >>And given the website, I'm just shocked "Iron Giant" isn't there.<<

It's #29, just below "Snow White."
