It will probably only make about 50 million more from this point on, not good for Disney.

The Caspian side was pretty empty, though, but it's also been at the drive in for 2 weeks, and was playing with College Road Trip. Numbers really don't mean anything...especially with matinee prices, and places like the drive in which charge only $1 for kids. It's part of a series, which means that once it comes out on DVD, many people who bought the 1st one will buy the second to complete the collection. And also, people like me, who have never seen the first, will probably buy the first, and go back to the theater to see the 2nd to get the full effect.

Japan -- the only major market without a "Crystal Skull" opening -- led the way with a first-place launch weekend of $7.7 million at 320 as it outgrossed the next four films. "Caspian," which will expand gradually offshore over the next two months, has already cumed $49 million internationally with grosses 15% ahead of the original "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" in the same territories. Mexico led the holdover markets for "Caspian" with $3.1 million, down 50%; Russia with $2.4 million and South Korea with $1.9 million. "Caspian" also played well in India -- where "Crystal Skull" opens next weekend -- with $820,000 to boost its two-week cume to $4.1 million, 70% higher than the entire run of the original."

And yes if you count foreign and dvd grosses it will turn a profit. But there's been talk of Disney ending the series after Voyage of the Dawn Treader. That film is scheduled to open around May 10 of 2010 but guess what comes the week before, the Iron Man sequel. That might give the Disney execs a reason to move the film. Quite frankly this should have been released during the Holidays.

But Walden wanted the date for their film Waterhorse. (Remember that one?) So Caspian got moved to this very competitive season. Iron Man was the first unexpected obstacle. It has done extremely well ever since it opened. That nicked Caspian's opening weekend. The percentage drop between opening weekend and weekend two are usually considered a predictor of how a film will ultimately fare. But all bets are off when the next weekend has a juggernaut (ie: Indiana Jones) opening. That Caspian was pulling in any business at all is a good sign. The real proof is in the critical reviews, and audience reaction. There haven't been reports of audience hostility. And the consensus of reviews is that the film is a good sequel. My kids liked it well enough. (They are a 13 y/o boy and a 17 y/o girl. The 17 y/o and a friend liked Ben Barnes enough to see it twice already.) I believe that if Caspian is left in theaters, it will keep quietly racking up receipts throughout the Summer. The only difficulty will be if theater owners decide to pull it for newer films. Aside from Wall.E and The Hulk, what other potential blockbusters will take screens from Caspian? Oh, and as was pointed out above, Caspian should have a great overseas box office. So calling this a flop is very premature.

Not the most convient thing, but YoungerP can sing all he wants in our own car, and we will have bought 2 sets of tickets.
