They might trade the Navigator in on an Escape though. If it got up to $10 per gallon they would trade in the Escape for a Prius. If it got up to $15 per gallon they might even start car pooling.

When it hit 8 dollars the trucks started rolling blockades and there were protesters stopping trucks leaving the refineries. The country came to a halt with people unable to get to work and food shortages. Price csme down for a bit with government intervention, but it crept back up

Of course, I recall being shocked since America at the time was only around $1. But interestingly, here in Japan for whatever reason, gas is STILL around that $4 per gallon mark! Which makes it seem almost cheap at this point!

So, my guess is there is some intervention with the car makers to prevent a huge rise (given the state of the world prices now, Japan should be at $12 or more based on 10 years ago!).
