I wasn't too sure what to expect of this movie. I am a huge fan of the book and I have it on my Kindle just so that I can pop in and re-read a section in case I need a bit of fun in my life.

I am a Tim Burton fan, so at least that was going for it.

When I left the theatre, a LOT of things popped into my mind about how the movie made me feel, but as time has passed (I saw it Friday the 19th) I really, really enjoyed it.

I won't go into details as I don't wish to spoil anything, but Alice fans will enjoy this particular take. I hope.

The art direction was great. The costumes were fabulous. Keep your eyes on Alice throughout the movie...

Anyway, I can't wait until more people see it and then we can open up a "with spoilers" thread so that I can really get into a groove.

Without spoiling anything, I can say that I only had two issues with the movie:

    1) I felt it really wasn't Tim Burton enough for my taste.

    2) A certain character used a certain phrase OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER again and it became really headachy to me.

Colleen Atwood's costume direction is genius and the costume designs are fun and Burton-like just as I'd hoped. Kudos to her for showing up to the preview.

To answer MMC's question - there were many creative costumes at the preview. One gal had a short colorful Alice dress with a very long lace train. On the train were cups and teapots, etc to make it look like the Mad Tea Party. Another gentleman had a shoe smith (cobbler??) make an exact replica of the Mad Hatter's shoes from the movie. Colleen Atwood called some of the folks up on stage to look at their designs and they all won $50 Hot Topic gift cards.

This might actually be the most encouraging review of this film I've yet to read. I'm not really a fan of Tim Burton's stuff (too much weird-for-the-sake-of-weird stuff for me), so hearing that this isn't as much of his usual stuff is pretty good news, IMO.

I've also heard (from a friend who read the script a while ago) that a good way to think about the film is like the Alice equivalent of Hook. I really enjoyed Hook and I think it has a lot of really clever ideas. I'm not sure if it will be as original since it's been done before, but it still sounds promising. The more I read about it, the more I think I might actually go see it.

"Bottom Line: Truly, madly wonderful." A good review from The Hollywood reporter pretty much seals the deal for me!
