A couple of times we got the actual key card (but not the room number until we called) and a couple of times we had to go to a certain desk to get out key. I think having the keycard in hand has been the most recent trips.

Last time we were at PPH and checked in early (probably around 11am) they offered us a lower floor room that was ready (we had requested upper floor) DH wanted to wait so we went and had lunch in DTD and then came back to the hotel and waited in the coffee/bar area until our room was ready (you can use the house phone at the hotel). It probably depends on how booked they are but I'm sure that if they are able to they will give you a room at check in, the hours didn't seem to matter, just the availability of a clean room :)

The front desk will have more rooms to work with if you try for an upgrade, etc. My family came in early on 7/16 to the GCH, and they were able to give us two connecting rooms, even though our original reservations were for two different views.

I'd been up since 5 am my time, and by 3 pm CA time, I was exhausted (12 hours straight). I was there for a conference and wanted to rest and change before the opening ceremonies. I ended up just asking the person on the phone for anything available. Actually ended up with low floor theme park view instead of the standard view I'd booked.
