The reason you get sick from it is that the shot actually contains a small amount of flu in it. It is so your immune system can learn to guard against it. Kind of like building up a tollerance of Iocane powerder for the dread pirate roberts. So some people get sick from it becuase in fact you are getting a small amount of the flu in the shot. I have been told that those that get sick from it actually have a better chance of it working down the road vs someone who doesnt get sick because your immune system didnt have to try that hard to kill it in the small amount and wont be ready for a full blown sickness.

This is the "get sick" that people complain of after the shot. It does not compare to having actual influenza, which, for most people who get it, is 10 to 14 days of absolute misery. In some people, the flu is less intense. For some, it is deadly.

Almost a year ahead of time, flu vaccine manufacturers have to decide which flus are most likely to be pandemic the next winter, and they formulate that season's vaccine according to those guesses. Each vaccine typically contains four viruses. The makers usually guess right about the flus that go around. The vaccine works against these flus in MOST of the people who receive the vaccine. The immunity doesn't begin right away, though. It takes a week or so to develop your full immunity.

There's nothing unsafe about the vaccine, and it can prevent a miserable and/or serious illness. It makes sense to get the shot.

I figure that since I live in an area with a lot of retires and young families, I don't want to take up shots that can go towards others who will need them more. I'm a healthy adult. Last year's lack of inventory really gave me pause to think about it.

And, for a selfish reason: I never take a lot of time off from work. If I happen to get the flu, it really gives me a chance to slow down and pamper myself for a few days.
