Exactly, but not in the way you're thinking. When and if they do go nuts, you don't hear about it *because* they're not as famous and/or they aren't saddled with the Disney brand. (And because they're not as famous, they can't go as *extravagantly* nuts as the Disney gals do.)

Again, keep in mind that you're thinking about 5 or 6 high-profile cases (all female, I'm guessing) out of dozens of "stars", most of whom turned out just fine, thanks. You're never going to see TMZ do a story on "NEWS FLASH! Ashley Tisdale had a perfectly ordinary, boring day taking care of her kids, walking the dogs and minding her own dang business!!"

(Disclaimer: I have no idea what Ashley Tisdale's current familial and/or pet status is.)

Child stars were self-destructing for years before The Disney Channel was invented. It's a high-risk environment for certain personality types. The point is, it's not a Disney thing, nor is it an epidemic. It just looks like it because that's how the media rolls.

There's a difference between self-destructive and perhaps a disregard for normal social boundaries. Lindsey Lohan is the former, Miley Cyrus is the latter. I'm not necessarily arguing all of Miley's choices have been the best, but as a man, I am extremely uncomfortable lecturing a woman on what she ought and what she ought not to be doing with her body. She's in an impossible double-standard the public created for her.

And I agree with ecdc about Miley. She's obviously taking a page from Gaga. If it furthers her career while keeping her out of the courts, who gives a crap? I certainly don't.

And even though she wasn't on the Disney Channel as the star of her show (she was on NBC), Miyam Bialik is a wonderful example of a successful adult as both an actress and neuroscientist. She also had a brief Disney Channel connection in her twenties as the voice for Justine Flanner, teen physicist, in the Kim Possible series.

    >>The Associated Press, once a serious news outlet, duly filed a story on the stunt: “In an unabashed—and likely successful—bid for attention, singer Miley Cyrus smoked a joint on stage and twerked with a dwarf during the MTV Europe Music Awards.” It was, of course, “likely successful” thanks to the efforts of media organizations like the Associated Press.<<

Disney kids are spunky in some way, and I think that’s why Disney hires them. “Look, he jumped up on the table!” Five, six, ten years later, they’re like, “Oh! What do we do?” Come on, guys. You did this to yourselves.<<
