I’ll admit that the premise raises a few eyebrows, especially when the words “controversial book†are mentioned. But still, why must you all rush to the conclusion that this will be a morally bad show based solely on a summary written by a journalist? There have been many great books that were labeled as controversial and shunned: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Chocolate War, most of the books by Judy Blume, heck, even the Harry Potter books! The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier was an incredible book with a really good message. But people rebuked it because he gives a real look into the lives of teenaged boys. How dare he create real characters in his story, instead of giving us a “sugar-coated†view of teenaged boys. Ever wonder why boys don’t like to read? When I was a teenager, I hated reading those books that made everything about being a teenager seem like I was reading a 50’s sitcom. “Golly gee, Beaver…Johnny brought a gun to school today. Sure was a good thing we caught him in time, and talked him out of shooting that guy who stole his lunch yesterday before something REALLY bad happened. Maybe Dad will let me drive the car around the block as a reward!†I’m sorry to get off on a rant, but it really bugs me when people judge a book without taking the time to read it. It could very well be that “Doing It†has a very important message that teenaged boys should read. What better way to reach our children and, God forbid, get them reading in the process? Perhaps this book could be read not only by the teenaged boys, but also by their parents followed by *GASP* a discussion as a family! To me, it sounds like this book may be a great tool for showing teenaged boys the problems that living a sexual life at such a young age may lead to. Of course, I haven’t read it, but I’m not going to attack the author or Disney before taking the time to understand what the book is about and what the author was trying to say. All I’m trying to say is that we need to be willing to give them a chance to show us what they want to do with the story BEFORE we start boycotting them and attacking this show.

The Variety article did indicate that the show "will broaden its focus to include more family stories".
