The UK's Guardian film blog talks about Disney's decision to go ahead with a third Tron film. After director Joe Kosinski's announcement that not only would there be another Tron, but it would be like Empire Strikes Back or Dark Knight the Guardian evaluates the possibility of that occuring. Below is LaughingPlace.com's interview with Kosinski at the Tron: Legacy Blu-ray Media Junket.

The only reason Disney is moving forward with this franchise, is the big gaping hole in their brand lineup for the ComicCon crowd. They might own Marvel, but they don't have a stable of films like X-Men and Iron Man to exploit at the box. So, they take the fallback position and punt with TRON.

I can't wait for the next film to earn even less than the second, which has yet to cross the $400 million mark worldwide. Very poor business decision.

I saw TRON: Legacy and thought it was just a snorefest. It takes itself SOOOOO seriously. Clearly, no one in the grid has a sense of humor. :)

Hummm...yeah not a good thing when the Disney store wants to purge the themed toys of your fav movie. But here is holding onto hope.

I have LOVED many movies in the past, but I don't think I ever TRULY grapsed hold of what it meant to be involved in a "cult classic" until TRON Legacy. Sure, I've been down the road with the VW Beetle, the Rocky Horror Picture Show, KISS, Star Trek, Star Wars, Monty Python, Dr Who, to name a few. But when Kevin reintegrated with CLU2 at the end of TRON Legacy, and sacrificed himself for Sam (and the rest of humankind) I have to say, I was touched, moved, devistated and happy. It ended the exact way that it should have ended. It was like Kevin saying goodbye not only to his son Sam, but to me, us, the TRON cult followers.

    Good Bye Kevin Flynn.
    Good Bye big business Arcades.
    Good Bye 1980's.
    Good Bye my YOUTH.

    It's time to move on.

(But that being said, here's to hope that Disney - for whatever reason - will keep the TRON franchise "alive" !)

I was suggesting more the overall tone of 'Tron: Legacy', davewasbaloo. That particular character was perhaps not programmed for humor, I get that. (she was, however, programmed to look sexy and to sit in semi-erotic poses on the sofa).

I'm saying that overall, as a movie, the tone of the production was so gosh dang SERIOUS. Every moment has this same sense of gravitas -- from Kevin walking into the old arcade -- to Jeff Bridges eating suckling pig -- to the final scene with the whole universe coming apart in war. And when everything is serious, nothing is serious -- and it just becomes a bore.

The next movie needs to lighten the hell up -- dare to be a bit more fun.

Exactly, Jim. Here's what I wrote in the other TRON thread. It sums up what I feel are Legacy's problems:

The first film had a more cohesive story. The goals were better stated. And Flynn's interactions with the programs was less somber, more upbeat. Plus, the campy dialogue was a hoot. "Bring in the logic probe!" LOL!

The sequel is too dark. Sam isn't as likable as Kevin was in the first film, and has this sense of immaturity about him that Kevin didn't. Kevin was simply inexperienced with his surroundings, but managed to remain an adult in his quest to defeat MCP. Sam does not give me the same level of confidence. He's in his late twenties, but comes off like a petulant teenager most of the time. And that was a major turn off for me.

I think the whole ISO story is very thin. We never get to see the ISOs except through flashbacks, which is more of a letdown than satisfactory backstory for Quorra. Same for the army that CLU creates. Lots of bodies gathered for war... but then the war never comes. Letdown again.

CLU wanting to break free of the GRID is very hackneyed. It reminds me of a Star Trek: TNG episode where Professor Moriarty wants to explore the universe beyond the Enterprise. He's only a computer simulation in the holodeck, yet he has achieved sentience and desires more than the confines of his artificial environment. CLU is no different. He's just not as elegant and well-mannered as Moriarty.

The whole dictator-and-global-conquest thing was already worn out before this sequel was even considered. It's a variation on the original story with MCP, but not as effective. At least MCP remained in the confines of the computer system. I don't have to drastically suspend my disbelief to accept that premise.

And don't get me started on the vfx fountain of youth for Jeff Bridges. It does not work. At all. It's too creepy. I hated those scenes. And since the film began with one of those scenes, it was a major distraction, right out of the gate. The assorted acting and plot weaknesses that followed made it difficult to get interested in the story, which was very uneven from beginning to end.

This film could have been so much more, given the foundation the first film provided. I would hope the third film would be stronger, but I suspect the story is about to take an even more implausible turn, now that Quorra is out of the GRID. I don't know if enough people will take another chance on this franchise, given the poor reviews for Legacy, and the mediocre box receipts. Disney is taking a huge gamble with another sequel, just like they did with Narnia 2.

Actually, there was that somewhat jarring scene in the End of Line Club with Michael Sheen presenting what I can only assume was meant to be comic relief. We didn't actually see his character die in TRON: Legacy. I bet he'll be back for the next one.
