Will this madness stop? I've never seen such a young kid get so much publicity. I really think there are more talented youth (even on the Disney channel) then her.

I agree that she's not very talented (sorry Miley Cyrus fans!). But it's nothing really new.

The entertainment industry has always had a share of 'entertainers' who ride a wave of 'popularity'

Disney's own Annette Funnicello comes to mind. She couldn't really sing -- and yet released several singles and was very popular in the 50s and 60s.

Tiffany -- that young gal who got started singing in shopping malls in the late 80s 'I think we're alone now.' Not a real talent there.

Debbie Gibson to some degree in the 90s.

Rhianna falls into this 'popular' category.

And many would disagree with me, but Madonna is another one. When she first made her debut in the early 80s, young people loved her. Some people have followed her into adulthood and still think she's fabulous. I think she's a fairly mediocre singer, and just an okay actor. But she has legions of fans who worship her.

Gosh, if companies could predict the popularity of a movie, or band, or piece of music, or pop singer -- they'd have a lot more money than they do now.

It's something that can't really be predicted.

...and the Disney Character Warehouse wouldn't be full of unsold Aly & AJ merchandise. ;-)

I'd argue this one. People who can't sing don't go on to successful careers in Broadway musical theater.

Which is a shame, because Aly & AJ's music stomps all over anything Miley has ever done.

And they were singing for change.

It makes me SOOOO upset to see these singers today who don't have any talent (especially the rappers) and are making so much money they don't know what to do with.

Excuse me while I go scream!

It started with the 50s, when teenagers suddenly had money to spend on records, and a TV to see their favorite stars on.

I think you can zero in on handsome actor Tab Hunter's terrible cover of "Young Love" - a #1 hit in early 1957 - as the point when the industry discovered that below-average talents with the right look could still become music stars.

It's been going on ever since, and I don't think you can successfully argue that it's much worse now than it was in 1961 (unless you just refuse to admit that rap actually does require a little talent). At least now they have the ability to digitally fix mistakes and pitch problems, luckily for the stars of the Disney Channel.

I agree with this statement 150%. Aly & AJ could take the cake easily with talent compared to Miley Cyrus.

Sorry, but it goes back much farther than that. As long as people have been paid to perform, there have been other people with more raw talent but less sex appeal or stage presence standing at the back of the audience and complaining about being overlooked.

Oh, aye aye, no doubt. I was only speaking in terms of the modern pop music industry.

Prior to the 50's, people who were actually BAD singers couldn't have a recording career, except as a novelty act. Once it became easier to spread the image as well as the music, and the buying power shifted to less-discerning younger customers, that all changed.

Really? It's like saying you don't have a problem with bad actors, as long as they're in a Jerry Bruckheimer movie.

Rare is the artist who creates deeply meaningful music and sells millions of records.
