This was awesome, thankyou so much!! I plugged in my Disney Christmas cd, made hot chocolate in my giant Disneyland Christmas mug and had a Disneyland Christmas wish list extravaganza!! I doubt drug addicts get one tenth the amount of pleasure! Can't wait to see more pics of the decorations and everything coming up and I REALLY can't wait to be in Disneyland in 55 days! Save some merchandise for me you guys!!

I used to work in the collectibles industry, and have seen this happy way too many times.

Have fun collecting, but be responsible with your funds!

And - had you read a bit more closely - you would have found the proviso for my column "Notwithstanding other considerations - like legality and paying rent - there are few of us who would disagree."

I'm not advocating indiscriminate spending - but - if the buyer feels that the Autopia car of their dreams is worth a month of PB&J - then buy the car - pay your rent first - and then buy the car.

It was my point that a buyer will pay any cost that "they" deem to be acceptable - "responsible" or not - within the confines of their own financial - and emotional - considerations - for the item they want. And - that if a buyer wants an item - for whatever combination of reasons - then the cost has less consideration.

The collectables marketplace has very little flux when it comes to the implementation of any sort of "financial stewardship". The reality is that it's a buyers market - especially within the secondary market - the price-point for any item is still determined by demand. No matter the item - the price will be determined by the same factors that drive the entire marketplace - edition size - exclusivity - rarity - collectability - marketability - availability - historic significance - etc.

What a person pays for an item is not the responsibility of the seller - or of the marketplace - and is at the sole discretion of the buyer. It was also my point that emotionality is as valid a reason for collecting as are any of the other factors which make any item "valuable".

I agree that people should collect responsibly - but - it's not the responsibility of the marketplace to see that this is more easily done.

In the 30 years that I've been a serious Disney fan, the nearly 20 years that I've tracked the marketplace - and the 13 years I've been in the NFFC - I've seen just about everyone buy something for every imaginable reason - and I've seen my share of buyer's remorse and - yes - I've seen some over-extend into the kind of "trouble" you warn of - it's not the responsibility of the marketplace to attempt to control the buyer - in the Disneyana marketplace it's an impossibility.

Hope this helps define my point -

    Kim

But, also like you mentioned, the bills come first! I don't eat PB&J (can't stand it!), but the only decorations I have in my house are Disney - especially Mickey related. My DH is just sure he lives in a Disney Store!
