Having original vehicles instead of recycling them would have been nice. But given that this was a fix up job from the Limo mistake I think they did a great job. Reusing the characters is not a big deal to me because you cant tell, besides, this is done all the time. It would have been nice to use the video screens in the cars a little bit more. So would someone explain why this seems to be disliked by so many people on LP? Or am I wrong in making that assertion?

And I think it does a very good job of that. If you check around the boards, not many people are talking about the masterpiece of many of those types of rides, since they aren't really that big of a draw. That doesn't mean that people don't appreciate them or enjoy them while they're in the park, it's just smaller part of their vacation than a lot of things. Monsters Inc doesn't pretend to be something that it's not (Pooh anyone?), and it lives up to expectations just fine, for me at least.

If you haven't seen Monster's Inc., you have no clue what this ride is supposed to represent. The locker room scene stands out as incredibly perplexing to guests that have not seen the film beforehand -- what on earth is Disney doing with recreations of dirty locker rooms and bathroom stalls in a theme park attraction? Without the accompanying movie, this ride does not stand on its own. Compare that to something like Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, which is based on a movie but does not recreate any scenes from that film. Mr. Toad is enduring and stands by itself. It entertains people who have never heard of Wind in the Willows or scene the Disney film. Monster's Inc. falls way short of Mr. Toad.

We think that an attraction with high production values is better just for the sake of the production values. I don't dispute that Monster's is better than Toad in this regard. Those production values do nothing, however, if the whole story and environment is meaningless to anyone in the audience who hasn't had the chance to watch the film. Although Monster's Inc. was a very successful film, I don't that more than 20% (and that's probably a generous figure) of DL guests have ever seen it. I am basing my observation largely on an experience I had riding the DCA Monster's Inc. attraction with a friend who had never seen the film. The ride was very perplexing to that person and essentially a sequence of meaningless scenes that made no sense whatsoever.

I don't think anybody plans a vacation to go on this attraction. But nobody plans a vacation to go on Mr. Toad or Pinocchio either. In my opinion, as long as you know what you are getting in line for, you will enjoy it. Just like the subs, if you know that it is, a slow moving, character based "Dark Ride", it is fun.

I agree with you, and this is one of the reasons why I don't like the overuse of Pixar characters and situations in the parks. They rely too heavily on the audience to be familiar with the intricacies of the plot line and thus their mass appeal is questionable. "It is no more confusing than Snow White. Sure, we do not get all the details as we do in the film, but if you pay attention, all you need to know is given to you." True, but to be fair Snow White is a classic fairytale that (I assume) the lions share of the audience is familiar with if even if they've never seen the Disney film. I think Toad might be a more accurate comparison.

It's just a clever revamp of what was a poor attraction, making it an average attraction.

They could have made us riders go into spectacular environments. Basically, the ride is a dud.

But now that DCA has some serious upgrades coming soon ..... I wonder if there'll be any chance of a redesigned entrance.
