This type of thing is happening on a regular basis in Mexico anymore. Recently, it spilled over into texas, when a gun fight killed several people. It's something to keep an eye on, and could become a rather sore spot in U.S./Mexican relations.

You cannot load up the truck and take US goods into Mexico anymore for your family members that live there without risking be robbed blind and possibly fatally hurt. The resort area is vastly different than other areas of Mexico. The government does a good job of keeping that area sweeped as it is its cash cow for the country besides drugs and peddling other handmade goods. The roads and highways of Mexico have been a very dangerous place for many many years. And now the gang activity flowing between the states and Mexico is lethal.

I live near Detroit, which is on-again,off-again the Murder Capital of the US. I go into the city regularly. I don't worry about being killed. It's not random tourists who get killed. It's mostly people who are involved knee-deep in criminal operations. And, tragically, it's sometimes party-store clerks and gas-station attendents. Sometimes it's people who are victims of domestic violence. Once in a while it's a truly random attack on an innocent bystander/tourist. The problem with Mexico is, the violence associated with Mexican drug trafficking is obviously escalating. It is becoming more brutal, and it is spilling across the border. And it is becoming less confined to those who choose to be involved in drug trading. Completely innocent people are being kidnapped, caught in cross-fire, robbed, or otherwise victimized. A few years ago, I spent a completely blissful day as a tourista in Tiajuana. I knew enough not to drink the water, accept offers for dope or companionship, or get into an unmarked taxi. With that knowledge, I was golden. I wandered the streets and had a great time. Now... there's not a chance in hell that I'd willingly spend a day in Tiajuana.

Puerto Vallarta, Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel to some small extent Cabo, all are rather like what Disneyland is in La......yes La is dangerous a Gangland city BUT you can find areas that are safe. The above Mexican cities are kinda like the Disneyland in Mexico....can bad things happen??? You bet it can BUT if you keep your senses about you and don't hang with the drug cartel, good chances you will be fine.

The lines between law-enforcement and personal greed and drug trafficking are totally blurred in Mexico. <<I know I probably seem radical but I will not give this country a penny of my money until it cleans up its act.>> Your position doesn't seem radical to me at all; it seems principled. I agree with you. Mexico has rich traditions, a number of national resources, and the potential to be a power player in the 21st Century World. And the current government (like the governments before it) is allowing the country to operate as a third-world, corrupt, drug-trade-influenced shadow of what it could be. Que lastima.
