Will we see the destruction of the offices of Hallmark Cards and Whitman's Candies next week???<<<< Poor Islamic women. They must really be ticked off about a lot of things. This must be the tip of the iceberg. Islamic men had better beware because these women are going to become stronger and stronger and one day . . .well, it won't be a pretty sight.

The Muslim shop owner was outraged that he couldn't conduct business, and he said that most of what was burned wasn't even St. Valentine's Day merchandise. I'm surprised that there are St. Valentine's Day items for sale in a place that doesn't have very many westerners or a strong pro-western culture.

Originally Posted By smeeeko sorry.. Valentine's day is NOT a christian holiday.. It's named after a saint but it's origins like Halloween and Christmas are based in ancient ritual. This particular holiday originated some say when Romulus and Rhemus would dip ceremonial strips of goats hide in blood and gently "slap" women with it and then those chosen would be put into a lottery and men would choose names from the lottery.. whichever name was chosen would be their partner/spouse. This ritual was stopped as the lottery was disapproved of.. I got this info off the History channels website.. "history of Valentine's day" The St Valentine's day legend goes that a priest was beheaded because he married Roman soldiers in secret after being outlawed (marriage that is) by Cesar thinking that unmarried men would be better soldiers. It's a fake holiday meant to push people to buy things like flowers and chocolate and junk they don't need. Missives and notes are nice (started in Victorian England) but really it's just a merchandising ploy by card companies. Personally don't care for the holiday. Give me Christmas & wedding anniversaries. Those mean more. =)

"The History of Valentine's Day While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial -- which probably occurred around 270 A.D -- others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to 'christianize' celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and a type of wheat called spelt throughout their interiors. Lupercalia, which began at the ides of February, February 15, was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at the sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would then sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification." but then it goes on to talk about the lottery and all that. Yeah it does sound disgusting.
