Well I'm glad that's over, because that affected my life how? I swear it drives me nuts, unless it happens in NY it doesn't happen at all.

In New York City you have lawyers and business executives riding the public transit. We get more concerned when THEY can't get to where they want to go. Besides... how is Muffy from Scarsdale supposed to get to midtown Manhattan for her Christmas shopping??

probably because those are the only ones that seem to take public transportation in california. No conspiracy theory here.

But speaking as someone who endured more than 5 hours of commuting a day, I'm glad it's over.

Typical morning commute: drive in gridlock to the Brooklyn Army Terminal where you can get a ferry. You can't drive on the expressway unless you pick up 3 strangers, and even then the expressway is a parking lot. So go to the ferry terminal. Wait in the dark in 20 degree weather for the boat that comes every 40 minutes. Feel your toes get numb. Realize there are too many people in front of you for you to make the next boat, and curse yourself for not bringing a thermos full of something. Then realize there are no bathrooms at the terminal, so maybe you weren't so dumb after all. Watch the people in front of you get on the ferry. Wait 40 MORE minutes for the next ferry. Feel your fingers get numb.

See the local State Senator come with a camera crew to say "I stand with you." See him make sympathetic shivering mime motions, then watch him leave 5 minutes later. Make mental note to self not to vote for this guy.

(In fairness, that part only happened on one of the days).

Pack into the next boat the comes like sardines. Notice that the maximum occupancy sign is mysteriously nowhere to be found. Have visions of sinking to the bottom of the East River, and having it look nothing at all like it did at the end of "Splash."

Get to Manhattan. File out of the boat. Think about maybe catching a cab, which supposedly will pick up passengers till they're full. Watch several dozen completely full cabs drive by. Laugh at yourself for thinking you could actually catch a cab during a transit strike.

Walk across the island on your frozen toes about a mile to the PATH station at Ground Zero. Realize that your eyes are not deceiving you - that IS a blob-like crowd bulging out of the PATH station, trying to catch the only trains that are running (PATH goes to and from Jersey and is not part of the city system.) Get to the edge of the crowd and then just sort of go with the flow the way one does when, say, walking down Main Street after fireworks on the most crowded day of the year.

Take the PATH train to Jersey. Then take the PATH train OUT of Jersey to another part of Manhattan that is reasonably close to your office. Walk the last half mile to the office.

After work is done, repeat. In reverse. Realize you're going to have to do it all again tomorrow.

Let me just say: The R Train never looked so good.
