Igloos and beauty contests and hunting from an airplane and polar bears and hockey and pit bulls and lipstick ... this is all fun stuff to draw. What does Obama bring to the nation's editorial cartoonists? He has relatively large ears, that helps, but Biden is pretty average looking, except for the weird hair. His "lipstick on a pig" reference wasn't a slam at Palin, rather, a sleazy attempt to offer some off-the-shelf imagery cartoonists can use. Look back at who we've had over the years: A collection of, to be kind, rather unusual individuals serving as president and vice president, which have offered endless material for cartoonists every where. People love cartoonists and decide every 4 years on who to vote for largely on what possibilities they offer editorial cartoonists. Jimmy Carter and that toothy grin. The angry scowl and 5 o'clock shadow of Dick Nixon. The anyone-can-draw-this mustache and spectacles of Teddy Roosevelt. The high-flying Brylcreem pompador of Ronald Reagan. The confused smirk of George W. Bush. Only Gerald Ford was a letdown for cartoonists -- too normal looking. To make up for this, he worked some slapstick into his daily routine, which was greatly appreciated.
