Instead we pay the price he demands, as he is the new holder of the debt: repentance. This atonement also has the power to help us change, really change who we really are, for the better. It's hard work, but it's possible. Fourthly, after his death he was able to take back his own body, to be resurrected. This is something that none of the rest of us, not being half divine, would have been able to do. However, now that he has cleared the way, all of God's creations can be resurrected. So, that's my answer as I understand it. I'm curious if any of the other denominations of Christians have a different answer for this question.
