And actually, Limbaugh's use was worse. Emanuel used the word "retarded," which is an adjective, and when I (and Rahm, and Rush) were kids, it was even an acceptable adjective. "Mentally retarded" was the acceptable usage. Rush, on the other hand, used the word "retard," a noun, which even when we were all kids, was NOT an acceptable word to use about people. My guess, however, is that the media has finished holding her feet to the fire on this one. They noted the hypocrisy, asked her the (pretty much obligatory) question, and now will pretty much let her slide, even though the answer was anything but satisfactory. They feel they "need" her as the closest thing the GOP has today to a "national figure." McConnell and Boehner are dull as dishwater next to her (or pretty much anybody), McCain has got the same "loser" tag that Kerry did in 2005 (i.e. they'll go to him sometimes, but not often), and the only other viable candidates for national GOP figure right now are media members themselves, like Limbaugh (which tells you something on a number of levels). Palin, on the other hand, is a seemingly inexhaustible quote machine, even when the quotes are inane. The mainstream media (as opposed to the actual liberal-based media like HuffPo) won't hold her to account too harshly for this - just wait and see.
