This is a horrible story, but my topic isn't about this exactly.

What concerned me is that, earlier in the day (my time) the topic on the main page read...

    Chinese 'slaves' freed from factory

    But was later changed to...

    Grimy 'slaves' freed from factory

Is this just a matter of CNN (or whoever controls them) not wanting to piss off the Chinese?

Why would they change that one word?

And even if they wanted to change it, couldn't that just have been re-written to omit the word "Chinese"? But why would they need to. The headline was factual.

Plus, "grimy" just seems unnecessary and insulting (further insulting, I should say).

Also, why would they put the word "slaves" in quotes. It's almost as though they are belittling the condition these people lived in! They WERE slaves, there's no question of that.

Anyway, I guess my topic is mostly about the PC press and why they do the things they do. Frankly, I'm pretty amazed at most of the spin and garbage I read in all the press these days...INFOTAINMENT and nothing more. Sad, considering the state of the world these days. But telling.

Now it's " China: Factory 'slaves' rescued"

Slaves is still in quotation marks. "Grimy" is replaced by "factory," which is better, and at least "China" kicks it off.

The original headline, it seemed to me, was factual and fine.

No quotes on slaves this time.

What's the motivation for all those headline changes??

My guess is the first headline was changed because it sounded like the Chinese government was responsible for making them slaves.

These were slaves that just happened to be held in a factory in China.

Strange that it kept changing and changing. Still, "grimy" was just weird (and offensive, I'd say...at least unnecessary).
