From a historical perspective it is a fairly recent development. In other words, you won't find much discussion of this topic within Orthodox, Coptic, Catholic, Armenian, Anglican, Lutheran, or Methodist circles, to name a few. These denominations have a somewhat different understanding of the end times and the return of Christ. I personally don't spend to much time worrying about the "end of the world". It is far more likely that my own personal life will end before the world does, and I believe that it is far more important that I be prepared for that event (my death).
