Goodman, appearing Wednesday on the ``Nevada Newsmakers'' television show, said, ``In the old days in France, they had beheading of people who commit heinous crimes. ``You know, we have a beautiful highway landscaping redevelopment in our downtown. We have desert tortoises and beautiful paintings of flora and fauna. These punks come along and deface it. ``I'm saying maybe you put them on TV and cut off a thumb,'' the mayor added. ``That may be the right thing to do.'' Goodman also suggested that whippings or canings should be brought back for children who get into trouble. ``I also believe in a little bit of corporal punishment going back to the days of yore, where examples have to be shown,'' Goodman said. ``I'm dead serious,'' said Goodman, adding, ``Some of these (children) don't learn. You have got to teach them a lesson, and this is coming from a criminal defense lawyer.'' ``They would get a trial first,'' he added. Another panelist on the show, Howard Rosenberg, a state university system regent, responded by saying that cutting off the thumbs of taggers won't solve the problem and Goodman should ``use his head for something other than a hat rack.'' <<

Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., the Republican front-runner and early favorite in the 2006 governor's race..... Goodman comes with some political baggage that would typically make an opposing campaign drool -- there was a finding against him by the state Ethics Commission, he's been a spokesman for a gin company, he told fourth graders his hobby is "drinking" and then defended the remark by saying he was just telling the truth, and he recently served as a celebrity photographer for Playboy. But Goodman enjoys tremendous popularity. "Despite all these things that might be questionable, he remains in some ways the Teflon mayor," said Dan Hart, a Democratic campaign consultant not yet tied to any candidate. "People tend to be forgiving of him because he's a character." Hart said that when Goodman first announced he would run for mayor, "he admitted he was a former mob lawyer and some thought that would be the kiss of death."<< http://talkleft.com/new_archiv es/000680.html

And I mean that in just the nicest way, dontcha know. Millions upon millions of people visit our town every year and find it quite beautiful, as well as exciting and a heckuva lotta fun. Some don't care for the glitz and that's their right, too. But to dismiss Las Vegas as an "eyesore" is simply wrong.
