It seems that last year, three female seniors at a high school in New York showed up dressed as Captain Underpants. The costumes were deemed too sexy and the girls were sent home to change.

To avoid a repetition, the principal has banned *all* costumes this year.

Seems like an overreaction to me.

    1. I can't argue with a high school telling students to keep the costumes at home. There's little enough instructional time as it is, and obviously x-hundred kids dressed up--however--does create a huge distraction. Have a dance, or a weekend festival or whatever, but a school-day ban actually does make sense.

    2. It sounds like a BAD Captain Underpants costume! Look at the books--it would be a closer resemblance to wear an egg costume, with added jockey shorts! :`>

Yeah. Think about it. One whole day of learning Geometric Proofs -- lost to Halloween.

    They're just costumes people.

It's like getting all upset because the jr. high and high school gals want to dress 'hoochie' -- so what?

    It is a costume.

    Ha!

And not that he HAD to dress up as an ogre, but he did suspect the parents might have outdated objections to his "princess" costume!

(either that, or he was afraid of having to discipline--without cracking a smile--several dozen boys dressed as Dumbledore)

I agree! People complain about academics, and schools are trying to comply. No harm in keeping Halloween to the afternoon or evening hours, or as I mentioned, scheduling a special extracurricular event for a weekend or evening.

Or, what I've noticed at many elementary schools--a morning costume parade, then costumes get bagged for the rest of the day. Since we're not talking about little kids, though, I prefer my earlier suggestions.

I think schools should always have the final say in setting standards of dress for their students.

You're right, the five or six 12-13 year old girls that came to my door trick or treating Saturday nioght should be allowed to look like hookers. And believe that's what their costumes were.

It's all very subjective as to how 'naughty' is inappropriate.

It just cracks me up that dressing up like Freddy Krueger or some slasher, or a flesh eating demon is fine, but a 'naughty nurse' is....not.

Remember, class, it's just a costume.

Actually, the principal takes a stand against horrific costumes, too:

    >>"What seems like a real funny thing is often hurtful to our kids ... with blood and guts or knives hanging out, even if they are plastic," Restivo explained. "We don't know what kind of emotions that evokes."<<

Meanwhile, here's something I found over at theonion.com that doesn't really have anything to do with the story, but I thought it was funny:

    >>Top Halloween Costumes, Women 18-34

    1. Sexy French maid
    2. Sexy cat
    3. Sexy witch
    4. Sexy hobo
    5. Sexy ketchup bottle
    6. Sexy prostitute
    7. Sexy Mother Teresa
    8. Sexy bus driver
    9. Sexy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle<<

What's with people who go into education? Do they start out this way, or does the job do it to them?

No real short skirts or bikini tops if that's part of the costume. It's a school first and foremost, dressing up for Halloween is a privilege at school not a requirement.

Hmmmm. Halloween was last night. If they were "trick or treating" last Saturday night, it may be time to notify your local vice squad to check out your neighborhood!
