To be fair, this article reads like a kid wrote it.

I agree with Arnold though...Rush was, is, and always will be irrelevant. He's just in the entertainment business, nothing more.

    >>LIMBAUGH: They (NBC) throw something up Arnold, and I have said recently, and it happened today. And he called me irrelevant. He said he's not my servant. And I don't know how it is I can be irrelevant when every time he shows up on the 'Today' show' they ask him about me. I'm just sure he's sick and tired of hearing about it, he's sick and tired of getting the questions.

The last time he asked about it was asked about me, he was very--you know, he was diplomatic, he said, well, we still smoke stogies together and so forth, and that would provide a bridge for common ground and so forth and so on. And here is the governor of the largest state acknowledging me while claiming all this time that I am irrelevant. They had this exchange, Campbell Brown with Governor Schwarzenegger.

BROWN: Rush Limbaugh is saying that you're not really a Republican, you're a Democrat pretending to be a Republican. Why?

SCHWARZENEGGER: Rush Limbaugh is irrelevant. I'm not his servant. I am the people's servant of California. What they call me if it's a Democrat or a Republican or an ascender or a change or a visitor, that's not my bottom line. This is for them to talk about.

LIMBAUGH: All right, now I could be charitable in this and I could say when he calls me irrelevant, not irrelevant as a human or irrelevant as a media figure or irrelevant as a conservative, what I say is irrelevant because he doesn't care, is what he might mean. That's being charitable. Just calling me irrelevant because he doesn't care what I say or anybody else say, I'm irrelevant in terms of determining the future course of the state of California because that's his job. I could be charitable and take it that way, and since I'm one of good cheer and optimism, and I--I basically think Arnold's a nice guy, I choose to take it that way.

I don't think that Arnold is referring to me as irrelevant, as a has-been, as a passerby, human being or what have you. I'm getting looks of doubt from Mr. Snerdley. You have a different interpretation of this? Well, come on! Was--Snerdley says the question's wrong. Once you say, Rush Limbaugh saying you're not really Republican--well, that's true. My--to these people in the drive-by media, Republican and conservative equals the same thing. I have said he's not a conservative. And, by the way, I want to remind all of you people in California, I have--from the get-go, I have told you he was not a conservative. Is a good guy, but he's not a conservative. He's a Republican. There are a lot of Republicans who aren't conservatives. He's conservative on some things, although much fewer as time has gone on.

But folks let me tell you why this is important. Gov. Schwarzenegger ran for office as a conservative after the recall of--of the dry and dull Gray Davis. And he was subject of many hit pieces in the drive-by media out there, the L.A. Times tried to destroy him with all these womanizing stories and so forth, and it actually drew people to him because he's a likable figure and has, you know, an image and a reputation forged on celluloid in Hollywood movies.

Now, here's the truth of the matter. Arnold Schwarzenegger has done the typical sellout move. He has sold out. And there are too many conservatives selling out these days. You can find 'em all over Washington, D.C. I want to remind you that one of the problems I've had I've got--people ask me all the time, have you chosen a Republican presidential--not yet. And one of the things I'm concerned about is there's not one Reagan conservative in the bunch he, which is OK, but then don't tell me that there is.

Don't tell me that candidate A, be it Giuliani or Mitt Romney or McCain or whoever else is the new Reagan. There isn't a Reagan out there. There was one Reagan. We can dream that there might be another. We can't be imprisoned by that, but conservatism is what it is. Conservatism is not subject to redefinition on the basis of presidential candidates who are 30% conservative, 40%, 50%, whatever percent conservative they are, that's not the new conservatism. At least it won't be for me.<<

Of course, Limbaugh has it wrong, again. He ran as a moderate -- he only got into trouble in California with his far-right driven special election. That he came back from that humiliaton to win re-election by being the populist moderate again that people voted for the first time around says that Schwartzenegger understands winning elections a lot more than an admitted water-carrier ever will.

More and more people are distancing themselves from the Limbaughs of the world, and Rush and his copycats are in a confused dither about it, reduced to blubbering "He's not calling me irrelevant" when those were the man's exact words. It's pretty funny.

When first elected in 2003, Schwarzenegger offered a populist message. But then he made a conservative shift two years later when he tried to push through a series of measures that, among other things, would have diminished the influence of California's public employee unions. His approval ratings plummeted.

More recently, he's been championing political cooperation under something he's dubbed "post-partisanship."<<

Limbaugh is as much a spokesman for all conservative thought as Cindy Sheehan or Michael Moore are for liberals. They have their constituencies, but, thankfully, they do not speak for the majority.

Oh, and a spokesman for Schwarzenegger said that the governor's comments were "not an attack on Rush Limbaugh personally... The question was about the criticism the governor gets from the right, and he thinks it's irrelevant to what he's trying to accomplish here in California."

It's about time, too. When was the last time anyone defended Limbaugh by saying by saying he offers up cogent, thoughtful political analysis? Instead, we hear that he's in the "entertainment business", which, to my ears, is saying he's irrelevant, especially to the political landscape. The problem is that there's so many people that believe the stuff he says is gospel. It's like Ann Coulter defending herself by saying her audience cheered the Edwards remark. Sure, and heroin addicts love what the dealer sells, so let the dealer go on unabated. Limbaugh is no better than Coulter, and their ilk are starting to be shown the door.

Hey, he's number one in the ratings, just ask around.

I agree with your basic premise, he's right in there with the Sheehans, Moores, Hannitys and Coulters. But there are far too many who are still buying this stuff, making the LA Times assertion credible.

    Exactly.

    >>It's like Ann Coulter defending herself by saying her audience cheered the Edwards remark.<<

When she (and Rush) are playing to their audience, they get nothing but approval. But outside that forum, they have to face the reality that they are speaking for a relatively small constituency. The problem for many conservatives has been to make people realize that Rush and Coulter et al are NOT representing their point of view.

Very true. The fact is, there are reasonable conservatives out there who don't have the forum that nuts like Limbaugh and Coulter do. It's got to be a freak show to get any attention, sadly.

Of course, they hurt the conservative cause far more than they could ever help it, all the while mocking people like Schwartzenegger -- a guy who actually understands the value of being more moderate.

Without emoticons it is hard to see that my dear Dlandug is more of a moderate republican that he is often accused of on the boards.

Rush certainly spends a great deal of time talking about Rush, doesn't he?

A legend in his own mind, as they say.
