Sneed hears rumbles Chicago Public Schools CEO Arne Duncan may be on a short list for U.S. Secretary of Education if Barack Obama wins the nation's top job.

The local ( Mayor Daley tied ) CEO of CPS - the system with a 52% graduation rate, (82% national average)

    <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2006-06-20-dropout-rates_x.htm#grad" target="_blank">http://www.usatoday.com/news/e...htm#grad</a>

Test scores far below the national average
Chicago high school test scores decline again
"The percentage of Chicago public high school students who met or exceeded state standards on a test tied to the ACT college-entrance exam dropped for the third consecutive year, according to scores released "

A system renowned ( even here) for the level of corruptness over the years, which spends over $10,000 per child on education, more than most of the local school districts for these results.

Arne's got some great ideas to spread around -like paying students to cometo school and earn better grades - yep- you read that right. This to go along with giving away ipods and the like to students to show up the first day so that state funding which is based on attendance is higher.

And of course the CPS will lead right back to the Ayers - Obama ( and Reczko) connections - something I am sure they should want to avoid.

I was at the Goat early last month a few times. Their Billy Goat Ale was actually pretty good.

Ciccone painted Royko as an alcoholic smoking chimney who partied much too hard into his 50's (read didn't slow down until his second marriage. His descent into liquor hell after his first wife died was horrific. For such a good writer, he was very insecure about his talent, but then again, so are a lot of writers.

But whatever- it's too bad no one has really taken up where he left off- the town could use it.
