I think Prop 8 sped up the process that had been dragging along for years. Without Prop 8, this issue might not have been resolved as quickly. Thanks, LDS. Your bigoted views of the world which you attempted to codify into law simply brought the issue into the national limelight to be resolved instead of pushed back into the closet and quietly ignored.

The reason it's particularly important is that about 1 in 9 Americans lives in California. 1 in 9! Together with the other 12 states where marriage is equal, it brings it up to almost 1 in 3 Americans (about 30%) living in those states. People move. Eventually there's going to be a case with standing where a couple married in one of those states moves to a state where they don't have marriage equality, and will be able to prove material harm. That would have happened without CA going into the equality camp, but this probably hastens the day. And, of course, it's just great news for all those Californians themselves.

The Constitution is pretty clear that all citizens must be treated equally, and having separate sets of laws based soley on gender is not allowed unless there is a compelling case in support of it. Personal aversion to gay sex is not a compelling reason to forbid people to marry.
