In addition to the New York and upcoming Las Vegas productions, they now have two touring companies which are both performing in Northern California (San Fran and Sacramento). I decided to see both casts this weekend, watching the San Fran cast first on Friday night and then Sacramento cast this Saturday afternoon. The San Fran cast, which has been performing in the Curran Theater since December 2006, did an outstanding job. Although I was in the back of the balcony, the guys and gals voices were so strong that I could hear every note as if I was in the front row. The music was hot, the actors' energy was electrifying and the mixed-aged audience was clapping to the beat of their favorite songs from the Four Seasons. For the Sacramento Jersey Boys show, the tickets and parking at the Community Center Theater were a lot cheaper than the S.F. show (and it was the same exact show as San Fran, with same sets and costumes ect.). So, I bought front row/center orchestra seats. The Sacramento tour company, which recently performed in Los Angeles, also did a great job. The guy who played Franki Valli (spelled with an "i" not a "y"), was actually a lot better in singing and acting than the San Francisco Franki. I believed that I was really watching Franki Valli (except for the part when they introduced Franki's teenage daughter who looked a few years older than her dad). During the Sactown show, I noticed that the gals voices were fading in and out during some of the tunes, including the opening French rap version of "Oh What a Night" and some of the other gal group numbers. The guys voices were strong throughout the performance and their dancing and acting were equally electrifying as the S.F. cast. Sitting in the front row was different because I realized that the actors could see me just as well as I could see them. And some of the guys accidently sprayed me with their saliva while they were singing. In addition, there was some male booty shaking that was happening way too close to my face, not to mention the guys singing directly above my head with their legs split wide open. So, I had to look down at my Playbill at times because I'm not interested nor accustomed to looking directly up at jiggly male booties nor other unmentionables. Other than those few negatives, I really liked the Sac show and cast, which received two standing ovations from the very appreciative crowd. Both touring companies are very entertaining. So, if you get the chance, see Jersey Boys when they come to a theater near you. But, leave the kids at home because the F-word is used frequently throughout the performance. And, sit no closer than the second row to avoid being sprayed and rump shaken.
